Cape Hatteras & Cape Lookout Lighthouses
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton, North Carolina, was built in 1859 and is the tallest in the nation. The beacon from the light can be seen some 20-miles out to sea and has warned many a sailor of the treacherous Diamond Shoals, the shallow sandbars extending off the North Carolina coast into the ocean off Cape Hatteras.
The Cape Lookout Lighthouse was built in 1859 and flashes its 1000 watt beacon every 15 seconds 24 hours a day. There are 216 steps to its lantern which is visible for 19 miles. This lighthouse played an important part in the Civil War. It became fully automated in 1950 and can only be reached by boat.
